White & Red Thread

The red Gujarati embroidery on this white silk was worked by artisans who practice a tradition that travels — Gujarati needlework has found homes in workshops across India, its distinctive mirror-work and chain-stitch vocabulary adapted by skilled hands far from its origin. The border and palla carry the heaviest work, while the buta across the body — small, self-contained motifs — were placed with the restraint that elevates rather than crowds. The white silk was chosen as the canvas for its ability to let red be entirely itself.

Bangalore silk is woven in Karnataka’s silk district and is known for its fine, even texture and extraordinary lustre.
