Blue Kantha Mornings

The kantha embroidery on this Tussar saree was worked by a kantha artist from Bengal or Odisha — regions where this stitch tradition runs so deep it is taught before almost anything else a young woman learns with her hands. The multicoloured thread work across the blue-shaded body creates a landscape of pattern — floral, geometric, narrative — that changes as the eye travels across it. Each motif was stitched without a printed guide, emerging from the artisan’s memory and imagination.

Pure Tussar silk — Kosa silk, as it is known in Jharkhand — has a slightly textured surface that kantha thread grips beautifully, each stitch sinking into the weave rather than sitting on top of it. The blue shading of the base gives the entire saree a sense of depth, like sky seen through moving water. Against the body, Tussar is cool and grounding — the kantha’s warmth and colour rising above it like something the fabric always held inside, waiting to be drawn out.
