Wild Wine

This saree was made using the soru tuli batik technique — a fine-brush method practiced by skilled batik artists from Bengal’s textile heartland, where a thin brush replaces the traditional tjanting tool to draw in hot wax with extraordinary precision. The multicoloured florals in the skirt border and palla were built colour by colour, wax layer by wax layer, each flower requiring multiple passes through the dye bath. The wine base was the final wash — deepening everything beneath it into warmth.

Tussar silk’s naturally textured surface gives hand batik a quality unavailable on smoother silks — the dye catches in the grain of the fabric, giving colour a depth and richness that seems to come from within rather than from without. This is forest silk in the truest sense — raised on leaves, coloured with earth, worn like a poem about belonging.
