The off-white floral pattern on this brick red silk was drawn in wax by a Bishnupur batik artist who left the patterned areas unwaxed so the off-white of the original silk base could emerge after dyeing — a resist technique where the absence of colour becomes the design. The yolk, skirt border, and palla were composed as a unified visual rhythm, the flowers repeating with the gentle variation of handwork. No two blooms are exactly identical.

Bishnupur silk is among Bengal’s most distinguished textile traditions, woven in the shadow of the district’s ancient terracotta temples. The silk has a natural warmth to it — a slight density that gives batik work a richness and depth. Against the body, it settles with ease — not clinging, not distant, but present in the way that truly beautiful things always are.
