Basanta Rounds

The round motifs on this saree — each one a small, complete world of colour — were painted in batik by a Bishnupur artist who drew them across the entire saree body and palla in a composition that suggests abundance rather than repetition. Multiple dye baths were required to achieve the multicolour effect, each round receiving its colour in sequence, the wax resisting what had already been decided. The black border grounds the composition, giving the riot of colour a frame to live inside.

Bishnupur silk is particularly suited to multicolour batik work — its tight weave holds each dye bath clearly, preventing the colours from bleeding into each other and allowing for crisp, distinct hues even when many colours share a single cloth. The fabric moves with a lively energy — as if it knows what it carries. Wearing it in Basanta is simply correct.
