The aquatic world in this saree’s border and palla was rendered in multicoloured batik by an artist from Bishnupur who drew each creature — fish, water plant, ripple — in wax before flooding the silk with colour. The chocolate brown base was chosen to evoke river mud, the rich earth at the bottom of things from which all life rises. Black highlights were added last, deepening the shadows and giving the underwater world its sense of mysterious depth.
Bishnupur silk has a tight, even weave that makes it an ideal canvas for detailed batik work — the dye does not bleed beyond the wax line, keeping each motif crisp and intentional. The fabric drapes with a quiet authority, neither too stiff nor too soft. Against the body, it feels earned — like the confidence that comes from knowing exactly who you are.
