Still Waters

This saree was made using the soru tuli technique — a fine-brush batik method requiring exceptional steadiness of hand, where the artist draws with a thin brush dipped in hot wax, line by careful line. The fish motifs in the border and palla were drawn by a Bishnupur batik artist who works from memory and tradition, each scale suggested rather than drawn, each tail a single confident stroke. The brown cracks across the body are not imperfections — they are the wax speaking, the silk breathing.

Bishnupur silk carries the weight of a very old heritage — the Malla rulers of Bengal were its original patrons, and the craft has never left the district since. The silk is dense and lustrous, with a body that holds its shape while moving gracefully with the wearer. Wearing it is like carrying a piece of a very long story — one that began long before you, and will continue long after.
