The lotus motifs on this saree were drawn in hot wax on bright blue Bishnupur silk by an artist from West Bengal whose family has practiced batik for generations. The orange dye was applied after the wax lines were set, creating the characteristic warm glow around each flower. The palla carries a detailed poddo — the Bengali word for lotus — worked in fine batik lines that echo classical Bengal patachitra traditions. Each motif was placed by hand, not by machine.
Bishnupur silk is woven in the Bankura district of West Bengal — a region as famous for its terracotta horses as for its silk. The fabric has a natural sheen that makes colour appear lit from within. Against the body, it is cool in the first moment and then warm and familiar — like returning to a place you love.
